I'm pretty new also, and I have 16 creatures. :)

I have 16 creatures and 5 capsules. I finally got myself a doggie! Once I get the gold system understood better, hopefully I can obtain more stuff with the Genome Splicer. :)
Hoarding g1 Fluganta Ratos to make a Skeksis empire. I'm also making a Sciuro colony based on games played in Niche: A Genetics Survival game. Also hoarding Hundos and Krizos for...stuff.
