seriously, how does this sampling work?

I have
Input: BAAA
> _ 1 0 0
Input: BACA
> _ 1 1 0
Input: BACC
> 1 1 1 0
Input: BABA
> _ _ 0 0
Input: abca
> _ 0 0 0
Input: ABCA
> _ 1 1 0



I don't get it, am I looking for four 1's or what?
